In the latter 1960's he lived in San Francisco and studied with Jerry Hahn and John Reible and was influenced by Barney Kessel, Tal Farlow, Kenny Burrell and Jim Hall.
Dan toured and recorded with the "Paul Bley Band" in 1973 and 1974. During this time he was also introduced to the music of Carla Bley, who was a major influence on his composition and musical concept.

In 1992 he recorded "CONVERSATIONS," released on ENJA RECORDS and features Steve Swallow and John Betsch.
