Michel Godard and Dave Bargeron first met at Rabih Abou Khalil’s “Cactus of Knowledge“ recording . “We hit it off musically and personally right away” says Bargeron. And it’s indeed amazing how well this euro-american summit of two of the most virtuous musicians with totally different backgrounds and temperaments works.
Dave Bargeron became well known for his work with “Blood Sweat & Tears“ . His discography contains recordings with a.o. Paul Simon, Eric Clapton, Qunicy Jones, Miles Davis and the Rolling Stones.
Michel Godard has worked with classical ensembles like the “Venise Baroque Ensemble” and the chamber music group “Arban Chamber Brass” as well as with Louis Sclavis, Anthony Braxton and Sunny Murray. He’s a regular member of the Rabih Abou Khalil Group and lately his own CD “Castel Del Monte” has won international acclaim.
For the accordion Dave and Michel chose Joe “Sunny“ Barbato who gave a touch of Castelfidardo to many a New York Jazz and Songwriter productions. On the drums there is Kenwood Dennard, a “brother in funk” for Dave since the days of being in the bands of Gil Evans and Jaco Pastorious together.
The musical spectrum of TubaTuba goes from funky brass band grooves (To Be Tuba) to free improvisation (The Night Is Still Young)., from beautiful melodies with a mediterranean touch (Valencia) to speedy bebop standards (have you ever heard Donna Lee played by two tubas ?) It’s both artistic and charming and by the way sets a new standard of “tuba jazz“.
